The Superheadz launch party was an extremely pleasant experience. There’s nothing better than being able to drink some beer and wine while wandering through a bookstore with some crazy beats spinning as your background music. I could have spent hours in there reading through all the books. I ended up buying the New York’s Bravest (collection of photo essays from the Daily news..I was a photojournalism major) for five bucks and taking some really sneaky pictures of all the guests. A few hysterically awkward interactions came out of it. I don’t know how New Yorkers got such a terrible reputation, cause behind the rushed, tense personalities, are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.

Anyway, the art on the walls featured several portraits of punked out characters from Tokyo, graphic design posters for a Japanese band, and a few architectural pieces. It wasn’t anything particularly amazing, but it certainly made me want to travel to Japan. It would have been nice to be able to actually play with the cameras a bit more, but I guess that would be way too trusting of people with beers in their hands.

edit: The portraits, I have learned, are actually of Chinese punks documented in a book called Sound Kapital. The architecture is NOT of Tokyo and is actually of Beijing. Thanks to a girl named Amy who pointed it out in my personal blog. It was unfortunate, but there were no captions on the walls. BUT Sound Kapital’s launch party is this Thursday at the same place. good stuff.

Japanese toy camera company Superheadz is having a launch party tomorrow at the Powerhouse in Brooklyn. They’ll be featuring several wonderful machines including some colorful twin-lens reflex cameras as seen above.

If you’re a fan of cheaply priced colorful 35 mm cameras that produce some stunning images, check out the event at 37 Main Street in Dumbo, BK tomorrow night from 7p.m.-10p.m. Free Japanese beer is nice too. I believe it’s free to get in as long as you send an RSVP to RSVP@powerhousearena.com Asians, photography, music and beer.. your Friday nights don’t get much better.

See you there!

This is in response to one of the multimedia stories on today’s NY Times style section called “On the Street, a Story with Legs.” It calls attention to a current trend that is apparently bursting at the seams in Paris: the over-the-knee boot. This trend, as street reporter Bill Cunningham says, requires a lot of patience and a lot of dough. In the multimedia piece, he talks about the variety of ultra-long boots that have been spotted on the streets of Paris. Some designers, such as Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs, have truly succeeded in keeping this trend sexy and subtle. Others, as with all trends, have taken it to such an extreme that I am shocked people will actually spend over $1,000 on them (see above).

“Go get your shovel, and we’ll dig a deep hole”

When I first heard this band I could have gone either way. Granted, it was 2004, and I wasn’t super privy to the “pop punk” explosion that was kind of happening at the time. Continue reading »

Millionaires_A2

Now, I know I’m nobody. I know that my humble little opinion pretty much doesn’t matter in the big picture, but I have to get this out. I’m sitting at Barbershop studios with Mike (of The Title), and he proceeds to show me this group called Millionaires. Wish he hadn’t. Continue reading »

The plaid and fur craze from the Fall 2009 runway shows have finally hit all department stores and it seems everyone’s going ape shit for it. It hasn’t been quite cold enough for fur yet, but I’ve been seeing so much plaid everywhere. I hope people remember that the phrase “everything in moderation” was made for a reason. With textures so rich as plaid and fur, I’m really looking forward to seeing both how well people will take advantage of it and how poorly people will fail.

“White Kids Dying of Hunger”

Paint it Black are some pretty righteous dudes. They damn well better have been considering all of the trekking around Hoboken we had to do.  Nathan had several broken toes, so by the end of the night he was about two clicks away from buying some drugs from the fat shits in jump suits at the Italian festival and then leaving it to yours truly to amputate.  We got in at around 7:00 (about half in the bag) and b-lined to the bar.  We each put away a couple drinks and then started needling Dan Yemin with text messages until the poor guy revealed himself to be sitting two feet away.  Sorry buddy!
